Breast Cancer Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer and the leading cause of cancer death in women (Up to Date, 2014). The associated risk can be as high as 12% for every woman in the United States, regardless of family history (American Cancer Society, 2013). For this reason, care begins with patient education, risk stratification, and preventative medicine. The paper will review preventative options, risk stratification based on genetics and age, and breast cancer treatment. Preventative Options Prevention of breast cancer begins with education of evidence-based preventative strategies. Modifiable risk factors such as the maintenance of a healthy weight and a diet rich in cruciferous vegetables, beta-carotene, fruits, fiber, whole grains, can lower the risk of breast cancer by 13% (Marshall, 2013). Moreover, omega-3 fatty acids, soy products, and curcumin have demonstrated some reductions in risk related to the protective pathophysiology. In addition, avoidance of alcohol can lessen the risk (Zhang, Simondsen, Kolesar, 2012). As a result, when women practice these preventive lifestyle modifications, breast cancer can be â€Å"minimally reduced by 38%† (American Institute of Cancer Research, 2014). Additionally, the integration of a detection plan is essential to identify disease early.
